From the dramatic geological features of our coastline through early Maori settlement, subsequent European development and more recently surfing and tourism, Kaikoura has been shaped and influenced by the abundant marine life and spectacular ocean on its doorstep. Kaikoura Museum’s is an awarding winning exhibition which highlights the district’s fascinating connection with the sea by showcasing Kaikoura’s diverse natural, cultural and social history.

The museum has a number of collections to explore and stories which allow its visitors to discover more about the distinct history of this special place, its people and their journey to where we are today. Specific collections include natural history, taonga Maori, village life, fishing and whaling, uniquely Kaikoura and a photography collection. They also have research facilities for historians and those interested in family histories of the district.
An exciting feature of the museum is the Kaikoura earthquake exhibition which describes the impact that the 14th of November 2016 Kaikoura earthquake had on this small town. It also includes over 30 individual ‘mini exhibitions’ contributed by the Kaikoura’ Community which help tell the many stories that have unfolded since this historic event.

The Kaikoura Museum is located on the ground floor of the landmark ‘craypot’ building in the Kaikoura’s West End, opposite the iSite. It is open daily from 10:00 am-5:00 pm. Entry to the museum is $12 for adults, $10 for gold cards, students or those with community service cards, $6.00 for children and $20 for a family (2 adults and up to 4 school ages children).
