The Kaikoura North Coast hunting area is a group of coastal reserves approximately 20 km north of Kaikoura. Blue Duck Scientific Reserve is included in the block. It is steep - the highest point, Patutu, is 1160 metres. It is a mix of forest, mainly regenerating podocarp and manuka, and open grassed areas. Hunters access this area for red deer, pigs, goats and chamois (in low numbers).
There are three main access points with parking areas - at Half Moon Bay, Okiwi Bay and Seaward Valley Road (Blue Duck Valley). The main track through the reserve is an old 4wd track which is not maintained. Access off the northern end of Seaward Valley Road requires permission from Dave Pickering by contacting + 64 3 319 5266.
